Update #65

Do Unto Others

22. Handcraft 2+ items as Christmas gifts each year (3/6)

Baby stuff for a friend! Yay! Mailing it out today, too!

24. Sponsor a kid off an Angel Tree for two Christmases (0/2)

Got the kid's name. Now to buy for him.

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (14/143)

I tried some new food at the Chinese place at the end of last month. It was some kind of shrimp with veggies in a cream sauce. Not bad, but not going to be something I get regularly.

This month, I had blueberry pancakes with cream cheese. That was different... and delicious!

48. Create/send 5 care packages for friends (0/5)

I wish I could elaborate more, but the dog is annoying the piss out of me.

Update #63

Personal Upgrades
60. Buy clothes suitable for an office work environment

I think I'm well stocked for now. Polos, slacks, khakis, trouser socks, sweaters, even a spiffy blazer. Yay.

Another One Done

Personal Upgrades
65. Completely restock makeup box and throw away old stuff

Done. Finished buying pretty much all my essentials today, then I threw away everything in my makeup box that was older than one year. There are a few stray pieces here and there, but they'll make it to the trash.

The only piece exempt from the trash is my Clinique lipstick. I need to write down the color name/code so I can find more like it. It's expensive, though. It was a gift back in high school, so it might be discontinued for all I know. We shall see.

Update #61

Personal Upgrades
60. Buy clothes suitable for an office work environment

I've bought three new pairs of pants and three new shirts. I also got a sweater for work. Yay.

65. Completely restock makeup box and throw away old stuff

Still working on buying more. Think I'll toss the old stuff tonight.

Update #59

Still haven't done squat. Working and puppy take up most of my time. Need to figure out if I had my new food this month or not... can't remember, but I know I've tried something new recently. Gotta remember if it counts or not.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Update #58

Haven't done squat since Goal 70. My life is all about the puppy, more or less. Will try to pick up Grapes of Wrath next week.

A Puppy!

Pets
70. Rescue a dog from a shelter

Well, he wasn't rescued from a shelter, but he was rescued from abandonment and from a horrible death of living the live of a puppy on a dangerous road. Plus, his previous owner was a real douche who didn't care if the puppy lived or died.

So yeah... I'm going to count this one as complete.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

Picked up The Scapegoat.

Reading
79. Read 5 banned books I haven’t already read (0/5)

I'm reading Lord of the Flies. It's nothing spectacular, but it's holding my attention.

That's about it.

Reading

Reading
78. Read the following books:
• One Twilight book
Memoirs of a Geisha
• Catcher in the Rye
• Gone With the Wind
Bridge to Terabithia

Bridge to Terabithia is quite possibly one of the saddest books/movies ever. I saw the movie first, so when I read the book, I bawled for about three chapters. There towards the end, I had to take breaks between pages. But I'm a huge softie like that...

79. Read 5 banned books I haven’t already read (0/5)

Since Banned book week is coming up soon (next week, I think?), I went ahead and made a list of books I plan on reading for my goals. I've already checked out Lord of the Flies. I might start reading it tonight.

I never realized how many banned/challenged books I've read until I was looking at the list of books on the website. I've real a LOT of them, many for classes at Pikeville. That kind of makes me feel good, knowing my professors wanted us to read these books, wanted us to be exposed to these books and judge for ourselves.

However, it did make it kind of hard to find five books to read. My list is laying around here somewhere... Oh, here it is!

• Lord of the Flies
• Grapes of Wrath
• Uncle Tom's Cabin
• An American Tragedy
• Lord of the Rings

These books aren't banned everywhere, mind you, mostly just regionally. Grapes of Wrath is just banned in the area it's about because "it makes the area look bad." Right.

I have no idea why Lord of the Rings is banned, or where for that matter. How sad is it that I actually took a Tolkien class and never bothered reading a single one of his books? Oh well.

Update #54

Cleaning and Organizing
7. Wash dishes once a week for two months (7/8)

I hope to get this out of the way tomorrow.

Confidence Building
8. Be more open about being bisexual (lose this lingering shame I was taught growing up)

Worked some on this by openly talking about it to my friend when she visited.

Do Unto Others
22. Handcraft 2+ items as Christmas gifts each year (2/6)

I've already promised Connie a scarf, so I'm going to toss in a matching hat. :-) Merry Christmas, Connie! My other gift is going to be a multitude of handcrafted gifts... I won't say anymore here, but if you're curious, feel free to ask. It's a surprise and the recipient might see this blog!

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (13/143)

Oh the joys of a Chinese buffet! I tried crab cakes this time, as well as some kind of steak and mushroom dish with a sauce on it... It was weird, but yummy. I was shocked by how good the crab cakes were.

Friends
46. Send each close friend a handcrafted item (2/5)

One item in progress is for Connie, one is for Haley. The other is for the unmentioned person in Goal 22.

Reading
78. Read the following books:

Memoirs of a Geisha
• Catcher in the Rye
• Gone With the Wind
• Bridge to Teribithia

80. Go to the library and select 5 random books I normally wouldn’t read and complete them (0/5)

I got my library card in the mail on Friday, so I'm going to the library tomorrow to see what I can find. My friend EdwArd is supposed to send me a copy of Twilight, so I'll wait on her before I go to the library for that. Yay!

Cleaning and Organizing
7. Wash dishes once a week for two months (7/8)

Yay for me!

Reading
80. Go to the library and select 5 random books I normally wouldn’t read and complete them (0/5)

I took the stupid book back. It was terrible. It made me want to chuck it into the trash or start a bon fire with it... and I don't believe in destroying books! Seriously, I've read bad fanfiction (and bad original fiction) that was better than that crap.

Character overload and vague descriptions topped with an overly dramatic plot line is a recipe for a really lame book.

Mission Accomplished

Reading
80. Go to the library and select 5 random books I normally wouldn’t read and complete them (0/5)

I'm starting "Dad By Choice" tonight. It's pretty short, so even if it sucks, it should be a brief pain.

Shits & Giggles
91. Read a trashy romance novel all the way through

Finished it. Boy... was I disappointed. I had Larry laughing pretty hard at my book review of it. I complained that there wasn't enough sex in it to make it worth my while.

But yeah, finished it. I have no new love for romance novels.

I'm thinking of knitting instead of crocheting the scarves I promised Connie and Catie.

Reading
80. Go to the library and select 5 random books I normally wouldn’t read and complete them (0/5)

Picked one up today. It's some kind of medical romance/drama thing concerning the ethics of whether teens should marry if the girlfriend gets pregnant. Random enough, and I already think it's going to suck.

Shits & Giggles
91. Read a trashy romance novel all the way through

Today I picked up "Savage Thunder." It was the trashiest, cheesiest romance novel I could find on the shelf. It's about a half-Indian guy and a redheaded English duchess.

Keeping Track of Time

To help me with my "Oh, I've got plenty of time!" syndrome, I've put a countdown to my sidebar. As of right now, I have 632 days 8 hours and 45 minutes left in my 101 in 1001.

Granted, that sounds like a lot of time, but looking at some of my goals (like finish writing a novel!!!), it's not long at all. :-O

Yup, gotta get to work!

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (12/143)

For August, I sampled my mom's new pickled corn recipe with extra vinegar. Not so hot. I also tried her new pickle recipe with garlic. Larry and I ate them like they were going out of style.

Good job, mi mama!

37. Arrange a visit/outing with Ron and Jeff

I visited mom for three days and two nights. Ron and Jeff weren't there.

Well, I'm making a care package, but it's not for a friend. It's for a fellow Ravler (on Ravelry) who's in need. Mostly, it's a bunch of dry food that won't perish on the trip, but there's also some tea and a couple of cat toys for her two kitties.

Who knows? Maybe we'll become friends after this. :-)

Bits & Pieces

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (9/143)

This month, we tried caramel cinnamon rolls... which were okay, but I like plain old cinnamon rolls better. We also tried caramel cookies, which were pretty yummy.

Outdoors
57. Plant flowers in a flowerbed and/or in hanging flower pots from the porch

Larry and I have been researching online as to what works well in our "zone," what works in our flowerbed area, and what won't kill my goats should they break loose and eat my plants. We've also asked Nana what she thinks. :-) Hopefully, we'll get some stuff planted this week or next.

Also, I wanted to note that I will most likely be changing goal #98 from "visit Connie and Catie in Cincinnati" to "visit Connie wherever she is residing at the time." At this point in time, I think any visits with Catie are to be considered not possible. This might change later on, since there's still lots of time left in my goals, but for now, there you have it.

In the future, I may make a change to my "Travel" section due to unexpected changes in my life. I may or may not still have the desire to visit this person anytime between now and the end of my 101 in 1001. Time will tell, though.

Update #33

Confidence Building
9. Wear a bikini outside (beach, pool, lake, etc.)

I spotted a super cute bikini at Wal-Mart yesterday that I absolutely adored. I'm thinking about getting it so I can wear it when Larry and I go to Nashville at the beginning of May. :-D

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (0/14)

I'm putting this one back on the back burner for a while. Now just isn't a good time for me.

Reading
78. Read the following books:
• One Twilight book
Memoirs of a Geisha
• Catcher in the Rye
• Gone With the Wind
• Bridge to Teribithia

Because my upcoming trip to Nashville will consist of a lot of sitting around in the hotel while Larry's in class, I'll need books to read. I'll get my library card and see what books I can find to take with me.

Satisfying Nerdom
87. Send 3 secrets to Post Secret (0/3)

I found the postcard I want to use for one of my secrets. Now I just need the guts to put my secret on it.

Shits & Giggles
91. Read a trashy romance novel all the way through

Again, I've got a trip coming up!

Travel
96. Visit Adam and Gina in Franklin

Franklin is just 45 minutes north of Nashville, and it's about 30 minutes from Bowling Green (where we plan on going to the Corvette museum). We'll see! :-D

Failed Again...

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (0/14)

Made it to 7 this time. :-/ Better luck next time.

Update #32

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (4/14)

This kidney infection has kicked into full-swing, so no caffeine for this gal. :-/ Here's hoping I can make it through Hillbilly Days without giving in. I plan on taking my mug from 2007 so I can get $1 refills for tea/lemonade at this one special stand. It's $5 +/- for a new mug with a drink. The mugs ARE super nice, but I'll probably be super thirsty. So 5 refills for $5 is a lot more reasonable.

I'm also going to try to take more pictures for my 26 things while I'm there. I just hope I'm up for it. I've been super-weak the last couple of days.

Update #31

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (0/14)

I drank a Pepsi today. So whether or not cocoa is considered a caffeinated beverage is kind of useless now. After rolling Frank the goat around like a Doug, I had to have a Pepsi.

Shall try again soon. :-(

Om-nom-nom!!

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (8/143)

I tried Haley's recommendation for putting french vanilla creamer in hot cocoa. Even Larry raised his eyebrows at the nom-nom-atude of its deliciousness, even before I told him what was in it.

Kudos, Haley-Cat.

Still Not Caffeinated

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (5/14)

I was very proud of myself yesterday while waiting for court. I didn't give in under intense stress and sleep deprivation and buy a Pepsi. I drank water instead. Today, I'm quite zombie-like. I'd love nothing more than a hot cup of coffee with French vanilla creamer. Yet I'm resisting. I might have some hot lemonade later. I gave up caffeine, not sugar, praise the Lord. ;-)

Day 2 Without Caffeine

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (2/14)

Technically, it's been three days, but only two were officially in my declaration of giving up caffeine. This really isn't so bad. I could get used to all this fruit juice.

FYI, cranberry-raspberry juice is AWESOME!!! <3

Weekly Update #30

Creativity
18. Complete 26 Things and post in my journal (1/26)

P is for "purple flower!"

Food and Health
43. Give up caffeine for 2 weeks (0/14)

I think this one starts officially today, somewhat against my own will, but my health kinda depends on drinking water and cranberry juice for the foreseeable future.

At the moment, that's kind of it.

Update #28 & #29 For Good Measure

I've not been keeping up with this blog like I ought to. Bleah... I'm awful. Mostly I've been tending to Jesse goat (please see my LJ for the last 2 weeks).

Creativity
17. Complete the 100 Snapshots Challenge (0/100)
18. Complete 26 Things and post in my journal (0/26)

Spring is here. I'm plotting things to photograph.

Satisfying Nerdom
89. Place tags on all of my old journal entries including LJ and Xanga

Still working. It's a good way to pass the insomnia away.

I've had a lot of issues of late. Hopefully tending to them and myself excuse me from my belated entries.

Pets
68. Breed Zoe and Frank
69. Supervise Zoe as she delivers her kids

Zoe was pregnant. She delivered today! We think it's a little boy. ^_^ I missed the actual birth, but I was there for the clean-up and afterbirth. Ew.

Update #27 & #28

Things have been crazy and I haven't been able to update. Here's what I've been up to:

Family
35. Take Chrissy on a “Cool Girl Club” outing

The "Hannah Montana Movie" is coming out soon. I plan on taking Chrissy. *tosses confetti*

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (7/143)

Larry's homemade chicken noodle soup! :-D

Friends
46. Send each close friend a handcrafted item

I've got a thing on my LJ where I'm making hand-crafted items for 5 people. Some of them are close friends. :-) I'm currently working on one for a dear online friend of mine.

Pets
68. Breed Zoe and Frank (still waiting to see if she kids)

Still no kids.

Satisfying Nerdom
89. Place tags on all of my old journal entries including LJ and Xanga

Still working on it.

Update #26

Due to having the flu most of the week, I've done squat all week, including accomplishing nothing on my 101 in 1001. I didn't even try. I just laid on the couch, watched movies, and slept.

Update #25

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (6/143)

I know I previously created the recipe for broccoli cheddar rice on lettuce and tomato with sour cream... but something was still missing. Last night, I tossed the concoction onto some warm tortilla shells, and they were pretty yummy. <3

I won't say they were the epitome of yum or anything, but it was nice to have this yummy meal in an easy-to-munch wrap. ^_^

Political / Getting Involved
72. Write a letter(s) to a government official(s) about a cause(s) I feel strongly about.

I forgot to mention in a recent post that I wrote a letter to the supreme court people out in California in protest of Prop 8, which will dissolve all the "gay marriages" that were allowed last year. So yeah, here's hoping.

Update #24

Natural disasters, power outages, and other generalized "omg what else can go wrong?!" have prevented me from updating on time.

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (6/143)

I tried pork chops made in an inferred oven. They kicked ass!

Preparation
75. Create emergency kits for all of our vehicles and for the home

We were able to buy a corded phone for our home emergency kit. Other items like unscented candles, small bottles of propane, and such were all bought up pretty much in a four-county radius. Very, very yarg.

Update #22 & 23

Due to the loss of power, I was unable to post my weekly updates. Here is what I was accomplishing during that time:

Do Unto Others
27. Make a photo album of grandkids for Karen

While not quite directly related, I've put every picture I have of Bubby and Chrissy on a flash drive for Karen so she can print out all the pictures she wants at Wal-Mary. YAY!

Food and Health
40. Try a new recipe and/or food every month (5/143)

I tried Karen's style of spaghetti... ew. I don't know what she puts in it, but it totally disagreed with me from the taste buds down.

42. Compile a book of recipes that I have collected, created, or were gifts

I have ONE typed out! Does that count?

Preparation
75. Create emergency kits for all of our vehicles and for the home

She's making a list, checking it twice...

Related to Stories
82. Complete at least one book in the Jade trilogy

I had a huge thought hit me last night about a troublesome character. Now to apply it!

Satisfying Nerdom
89. Place tags on all of my old journal entries including LJ and Xanga

I'm up to November 1, 2006 with my tags. Yay! :-D

Weekly Update #21

Pets
67. Leash-train Jack and Jasper

As of this week, all four goats are doing great with walking on a leash, even Frank! Maybe I'll try walking them up and down the driveway when it warms up.

68. Breed Zoe and Frank

Still no clue if Zoe's pregnant or not. :-/

70. Rescue a dog from a shelter

I've been reading into how to care for and how to train a dog. There's also a website for rescued Border Collies. YAY! I've still got a lot to learn, though, before we can get a dog.

Satisfying Nerdom
89. Place tags on all of my old journal entries including LJ and Xanga

I made it all the way from November 2005 to March 3, 2006. Not bad, I think. *nods*

Weekly Update #20

Satisfying Nerdom
89. Place tags on all of my old journal entries including LJ and Xanga

I've been putting this off because I wasn't up for re-reading old entries from late 2005. I'm feeling pretty emotionally spiffy today, though, so here's hoping I can make a sizable dent in the situation before I don't feel like working on it any more.

Weekly Update #19

Reading
78. Read the following books:
• One Twilight book
Memoirs of a Geisha
• Catcher in the Rye
• Gone With the Wind
• Bridge to Teribithia

I finished Memoirs of a Geisha the day after I posted my last update. It was a very beautiful book, though harsh. Of course, a geisha's life was harsh and not all about tea and kimonos. I think the biggest shock I had at the differences between the movie and the book was Mameha. In the movie, she is very sweet and kind. She's also kind in the book, but... it's hard to describe. She's kind for a geisha, but she's still rather strict, and rather harsh sometimes. I guess she had to be, considering the lifestyle. :-/

I really enjoyed the book, but unlike so many people who love the book and despise the movie, I still love the movie. It's a beautiful film with a beautiful story of a little girl overcoming all the odds that were against her and having her dearest dreams come true. The cherry blossom party incident still upsets me, but I guess it's a small price to pay.

Anyway, I should really get a library card and start reading some of these other books.
